Section 2: Mental Factors and Roots
The essays in this section discuss in more detail terms which were introduced in Section 1. The way in which consciousness arises with certain mental factors (cetasikas) has already been described; the first essay in the section discusses those mental factors which are only with unskilful and skilful consciousness respectively. Abhidhamma also analyses consciousness according to those factors which condition it. Roots, or rootfactors (hetu), are important conditions of the kind and are discussed in the second essay. The third essay examines more closely one of the three roots, namely attachment (lobha).
