Buddhist Meditation Classes In Sunderland
The Sunderland group meets on Thursdays 5pm to around 7.00pm, (with breaks over Christmas and Easter periods and continuing to the end of June), starting on September 27th. Please note that people may not join after Easter, but that a new class should begin in late September 2013: please contact Peter Harvey in early September for details.
Each class consists of a talk, and perhaps a discussion, then a guided meditation, which teaches step by step way of developing greater calm, inner strength and awareness through giving attention to the breath. No previous experience in meditation is needed. After the first week, there is the opportunity for one to one discussion with the teacher on the application of the method. While it is preferable to attend from the first class, you can also join later too.
We meet in the Vivekarama Buddhist Monastery, Mowbray Villa, 16 Bede Terrace, Sunderland, SR2 8HS - for a map and directions, see http://www.vivekarama.org.uk/doku.php?id=location It is south of Mowbray Park - from New Durham Road, walk along Stockton road, past the bus station. Follow the road round left, and turn right into Burdon Road at the traffic lights; turn left into Mowbray Road at the traffic lights. After the Zebra-crossing, turn left between the stone gate-posts into the small tree-lined back-road on which the monastery is situated - it is on the right about half way up the road. Walk past the pile of stones in the garden, and go up the steps to the front door.
In 2012-13, the classes run September 27 to December 13, January 10 to March 21, April 17 to June 27.
There is no charge for the class, but it would be good to make a donation to the temple- perhaps of £3 a week..
There is another class nearby in Durham City, which meets on Wednesdays at 7.30pm.
